Mercedes-Benz BlueTEC and AdBlue Delete

BlueTEC is Mercedes-Benz’s name for the SCR system that uses AdBlue. AdBlue (DEF) is injected into the exhaust after the engine to lower NOx. On a Mercedes it is controlled by its own AdBlue module as well as the engine ECU. The tank, pump, dosing injector, heater, quality sensor and NOx sensors all have to work together. If one part fails, the car warns you, limits remaining range, drops into limp mode, or, on later models, refuses to start.

In South Africa these parts are expensive. A single NOx sensor can cost around R15,000. A pump, injector or AdBlue control unit is often worse. Low-quality AdBlue, short trips and heat make the system crystallise and fail more often than Mercedes designed it for.

Typical Mercedes BlueTEC warnings

You may see:

Check engine light
AdBlue / BlueTEC system malfunction
Remaining range limited
“Eng. start not possible in ___ km”
Limp mode / safe mode (low power)

Common fault codes include:

P140300 — AdBlue control unit malfunction
P13E400 — remaining driving distance limited because of an AdBlue system malfunction
P204F96 — AdBlue system (cylinder bank 1) malfunction, internal component fault
P13DF09 — AdBlue system malfunction, component fault
P13F600 — engine cannot be started because the exhaust aftertreatment system has been tampered with

A diagnostic scan should confirm the fault before any work is done. Clearing the codes with a scan tool is not a repair. If the hardware is failed, the warning returns.

The usual options

You can replace the failed sensor, pump, injector or module. That is the official route. It is also the most expensive route, and the next part in the same system can fail later.

Mercedes BlueTEC / AdBlue delete

The solution we recommend in Johannesburg is an AdBlue delete on the Mercedes ECU. Delete means software. We disconnect the AdBlue control unit and rewrite the engine ECU so the BlueTEC / AdBlue function is no longer monitored or required.

After the delete:

AdBlue is no longer needed in the tank
BlueTEC and AdBlue warnings are switched off
Related DTC faults and limp mode from that system are addressed
The vehicle no longer runs the remaining-range / no-start strategy for AdBlue

This is not a refill, a sensor reset or a cleared code. If the system is already in fault, those steps do not fix it.

On Mercedes-Benz models this is the same job as a BlueTEC delete. It applies to most BlueTEC C-Class, E-Class, S-Class, ML / GLE, GL / GLS, Vito and Sprinter diesels.

Physical isolation of a leaking tank, pump or injector is quoted separately only where it is required.
